Amethyst is a variety of quartz having the mineral formula SiO2 (silicon dioxide). Amethyst is purple in color, as opposed to colorless quartz, due to the presence of iron and other trace element impurities in the crystal lattice structure. The crystal formation of amethyst is most often a six-sided prism ending in a six-sided pyramid. The name amethyst comes from Ancient Greek meaning not intoxicated, as the Greeks believed it would prevent drunkenness. Amethyst was an important gem in the ancient world, and was included among the cardinal gems (along with diamond, ruby, emerald and sapphire) until the 18th century when large deposits were discovered in Brazil. Amethyst is the traditional birthstone of February. The item "Amethyst Geode Sphere Natural Crystal Ball Agate Purple Points Polished Stone" is in sale since Saturday, December 21, 2019.
